Definitions of Malware, Spyware, Viruses and More - Beginners Guide to Malware, Viruses and Spyware

Computer VirusAs I was writing the article about the Rise in Computer Viruses, Spyware and Malware earlier today I realized about mid- through that not everyone reading that article would know exactly what those terms mean.

In order to help anyone who doesn’t understand the difference between a spyware program, trojan horse and a virus, I decided to write this little post in order to help out. After all, it was Sun Tzu who said “Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles without disaster.”

(please keep in mind that I am greatly simplifying the terms and definitions here, entire books could be written about each of the specific items listed below)

Malware - Malware is the general catch-all term that is generally applied to any piece of software that is installed and running on a computer without the computers owners consent or knowledge. Malware is a shortened version of the term “Malicious Software”. As the name implies, malware can be the cause of anything from loss of data on your computer, annoying pop up windows or stolen credit card and financial information.

Viruses, Trojan Horses, Spyware, Worms and a multitude of other computer programs can all be correctly identified as Malware, much like the words ‘cars’ or ‘automobiles’ are used to refer to all types of Fords, Hondas, Chevy’s, etc.

If your computer support person - whether it is someone at work, at school, your next door neighbors teenager - starts talking about Malware, they are basically speaking about viruses and spyware in general.

Computer Viruses and Worms

Viruses - The term ‘computer virus’ is often used by people, especially the talking heads on the media, to describe all sort of computer problems,in place of the more correct term ‘Malware’ listed above.

A computer virus is basically a small program that performs a certain set of actions, when certain conditions are met or the the computer triggers the virus program.

An example of the ‘lie-in-wait type of virus’ would be the Davinci Virus, that ran when a Leonardi Da Vinci’s birthday was reached on the computers internal clock. Until that date was reached the virus just sat on the computer hard disk drive and waited.

Just about any type of ‘trigger’ can be used however to tell the virus to begin its work. A certain number entered on a keyboard, time of day, certain program run on the target computer, can all be effective trigger devices used by computer programmers when setting up the computer virus.

Worms - A computer worm is very similar to a virus, it spreads itself between computers and other systems. It is a little bit different than a virus however in the method it uses to spread itself.

A virus will sit on a computer until the proper conditions occur to spread itself - the trigger event - either the IM program will run, a disk will be writen in the floppy disk drive, and then the virus will copy itself and place that copy on whatever convenient source of transportation is available.

A worm on the other hand will actively search out ways of spreading itself and can open and run certain programs itself in order to send copies of itself on to other systems. An example of this is when you receive an email from every single person who has your email address on their email address book.

In this case the worm got onto your friends’ computer, actively looked for and found the email program address book and then used the email program to send itself to who ever was unfortunate enough to have their address listed.

Virus and Spyware Threat is Larger Than Ever Before - Anti-Virus Companies Struggle to Keep Up with Flood of Spyware

You would think that with all the big companies such as McAfee, Norton, Avast, Microsoft, etc. working on security software, that the problem with computer viruses, malware and other software nasties would be a thing of the past, or at least something you don’t have to worry about so much any more.

The truth would scare the bits right out of your computer if it knew what was out there and had any say in the matter!

Recent tests and analysis by Anti-Virus testing and monitoring organizations have shown that the threat from Viruses, Trojans, Spyware and other ‘Malware’ programs are increasing at an incredible rate.

According to AV-Test.org - a German Anti-Virus testing and monitoring organization - the threat from malicious software has never been greater. Approximately 5.5 Million harmful software programs were released worldwide in 2007.

According to AV-Test, this has forced Anti-Virus companies to analyze an average of 15,000 and 20,000 new and different threats to computer security every single day last year. That is nearly 4 times as many threats that faced cyber citizens in 2006 and approximately 15 times more than in 2005, as can be seen in the graph below. (Click on graph for larger view)

Increasing Threat of Malware on the Internet

The New Face of Computer Viruses, Spyware and Other Malicious Software.

AV-Test.org reports that they have already identified over 1 Million new online threats in the first two months of 2008.

According to anti-virus monitoring and tracking companies, the threat from spyware is likely to rise even faster in the near future. Computer security experts in tracking the malware threat say that this is because the people and organizations that are creating these new viruses and spyware programs are no longer lone hackers trying to come up with that latest way to annoy people and companies.

The new threats are from full fledged companies that are hiring highly skilled computer programmers to develop the new programs.

These companies are concentrating on exploiting weaknesses in computer systems in order to do everything from tracking online web browsing behavior in order to place more targeted pop up ads on your computer screen to stealing your financial and personal information straight off your computers hard disk drive.

This Isn’t Your Dad’s Computer Virus - The New Generation of Computer Viruses and Malware

The new programs that these companies are developing are also especially dangerous because unlike previous versions of spyware, trojans and viruses; which were built and programmed to annoy, harass and destroy. These new versions are being developed specifically to remain very quiet on the computers and systems that they infect while stealthily performing their tasks.

It is no longer good enough to say “well I don’t have any system problems, my computer seems to be running fast enough and there aren’t any problems with pop-up windows” and believe that there is no spyware or viruses on your computer. The new breed of malware is specifically designed to avoid producing these distinct “my computer is infected” warning signs.

Making the malware harder to detect is only one of the strategies that the software programmers that are designing these programs are using. They are also learning and developing techniques for making their trojans, spyware and viruses harder to remove completely once they have been detected. Bits and pieces of the virus are being stored in multiple locations on a computer hard disk drive and are infecting many more sections of a program or application than ever before.

This has the effect of making the malware acting more like a cancer than strickly a virus. If even the tiniest part of the computer program is left on the victim computer, it can potentially download and install a completely new version of itself after the anti-virus program is finished scanning the pc. The viruses have not only been programmed to be self replicating, they are also being programmed to be self healing as well.

These new spyware programs are threateing companies, both large and small, as well as individuals, community organizations such as churches and volunteer groups as well as governments on a federal, state and local level.

Best Bitz of the Web: Songza.com Reviewed

My coworkers and I are always IM’ing links back and forth of cool websites that we have found online, so I figured what better way to help out my readers than to start a weekly review of my favorite, new and interesting websites that other people may find interesting but may not have heard of.

This week I thought I’d review a neat little streaming music site that I found a few months ago - Songza.com.

Songza has a nice and clean interface, much like Google’s main page. It has a search box where you can type in the name of the artist, group or song title. The site then searches online for any sources that match your keywords.

After the matching songs are displayed, usually around 35-45 to choose from, you have several different options. No registration is required to do any or all of the following:

  • Play any of the songs displayed
  • Add the songs to a temporary playlist
  • Watch the video of the song or performance if it is available on the Internet.
  • Rate the Song (very similar to Digg or Reggit - your vote help determines the ranking of the song in any future searches)
  • Email a link to the song to a friend
  • Twitter the Song
  • Embed the song into your site like I have below (My personal new favorite)
  • Buy the song

Mozilla Firefox Plugin and Add Ons Review - Colorful Tabs 2.0.10

Firefox plugin and add-on reviewsHello Again,

As I promised earlier, this is the first Firefox plugin and extension reviews that I will be putting up here at Tech-Bitz.

The ColorfulTabs plugin/extension for the Mozilla Firefox Browser is a very well designed and stable plugin. It is currently in version 2.0.10 and I have been using it for several months now with no problem whatsoever on Firefox version 2.

Because this program runs directly in the Firefox Browser itself it is not platform dependent. It can run on Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

I first downloaded and installed this plugin when I found that I was having a hard time distiguishing between the 10-15 open tabs that I always seem to have open at any one time. The ColorfulTabs plugin really helped me to find and keep track of my favorite websites. It also really helps to dress up and make the plain Firefox toolbar a little bit nicer to look at.

The colors are totally customizable and you can choose to have a rainbow effect or to make all your tabs different hues of the same color. I personally like the rainbow effect because it helps me to find the different tabs that much faster.

If you have a theme or skin on your firefox broswer however, you may find it more attractive to make all of your tabs the same color, with different shading/hues in order to complement your skins color schemes.
