Best Bitz of the Web: Songza.com Reviewed

Thanks for visiting Tech-Bitz.com, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed in order to stay up to date with all the latest news, reviews and how-to guides

My coworkers and I are always IM’ing links back and forth of cool websites that we have found online, so I figured what better way to help out my readers than to start a weekly review of my favorite, new and interesting websites that other people may find interesting but may not have heard of.

This week I thought I’d review a neat little streaming music site that I found a few months ago - Songza.com.

Songza has a nice and clean interface, much like Google’s main page. It has a search box where you can type in the name of the artist, group or song title. The site then searches online for any sources that match your keywords.

After the matching songs are displayed, usually around 35-45 to choose from, you have several different options. No registration is required to do any or all of the following:

  • Play any of the songs displayed
  • Add the songs to a temporary playlist
  • Watch the video of the song or performance if it is available on the Internet.
  • Rate the Song (very similar to Digg or Reggit - your vote help determines the ranking of the song in any future searches)
  • Email a link to the song to a friend
  • Twitter the Song
  • Embed the song into your site like I have below (My personal new favorite)
  • Buy the song

Primarily the main advantage of registering is that you can store any playlist that you create so that you don’t have to recreate it every time you access the site.

Each song/artist/group that you search for also has recommended songs/artists that you may be interested in as well. I have found/rediscovered many artists and songs that I had either never heard of before or had forgotten about by searching on this site.

Review Conclusion: In my opinion, this site definitely belongs on your favorites list, if for no other reason that it is a free and legal way to have an unlimited number of songs that you can listen to while your working on your computer. When it seems like your spend your whole life in front of the computer - like I do - that is a really nice option to have. I find myself visiting this site at least 3-4 times a week.

The other features such as the customizable playlist, ability to embed songs on your website for free and an easy way to preview new songs before you buy are all icing on the cake.

Make sure to come back next Monday for an all new Best Bitz of the Web review ;-)

P.S. - I almost forgot - Any aspiring artists out there may want to check out the new Songza.com Self-Promotion Beta Program where you can submit/upload your own songs and have them listed on the Featured Artists section of the site. You can have links to an online store for people to buy your music and/or a link to your band’s website.
