Yahoo and Google Working Together?

Could Google and Yahoo work together to fend off the merger that Microsoft seems ever more intent on pushing through?

As noted in an article earlier today, The Wall Street Journal revealed that a possible advertising partnership between Google and Yahoo could be in the future.

Under the potential agreement, which is still in the preliminary stages, Yahoo would outsource its online advertising to Google and display ads similar to Google Adwords on Yahoo’s search results pages.

According to the article, the two search engines have not formalized the agreement but the initial trial of the proposed program has been very successful so far.

Yahoo may be using this potential partnership in order to fend off Microsoft from attempting to take over the world’s second largest search engine.

Yahoo declined Microsoft’s most recent offer for the company after deciding that the Microsoft offer did not value Yahoo’s profit potential enough. Microsoft has responded by announcing that Yahoo has until April 26 in order to accept the deal or they would initiate a proxy fight to take over Yahoo by force.

This advertising sharing deal has the potential to have a large impact on Internet Marketers due to Adwords campaigns could possibly be spread between both Yahoo and Google and their respective search networks, effectively reaching approximately 75-80% of all searchers worldwide.

According to according to Citigroup Global Markets analyst Mark Mahaney the Google advertising deal could put an additional $1 Billion dollars a year into Yahoo’s pocketbook. That would make Yahoo shareholders think twice about giving in the the Microsoft offer.

At this point it is simply too early to tell how these talks between Yahoo, Google and Microsoft will develop.

Yahoo is currently also in talks with Time Warner in order to possibly merge Yahoo and AOL together into one company while Time Warner Inc. would retain a 20% share of the combined Yahoo/AOL company.

Best Bitz of the Web: GreenLivingTips.com Reviewed

Last week I featured a blog called EcoGeek.org, which primarily focused on the future of green energy,Green Recycle Symbol recycling, environmentally friendly buildings, etc.

This week’s Best Bitz of the Web will focus more on the here and now, with a review of GreenLivingTips.com.

As the name says, GreenLivingTips.com is all about learning about methods and products we can use in the present as opposed to developing technologies or concept ideas that may or may not be available in the future.

Whether you live in an apartment, dorm room, townhouse or own your own house with 5 acres of land; just about everyone can use to the ideas listed on GreenLivingTips.com to help clean up their little piece of the environment, reduce energy use, save money on utility bills, etc.

What I like most about this site is that it doesn’t preach the all-consuming ultra green environmentalism that so many “live green or else” sites do. To the authors credit, he focuses on how being environmentally friendly can benefit your pocketbook as well as the polar bears.

He focuses on little things from such as why and how to recycle cell phones to keeping your sink and shower drains in working order without having to resort to caustic and expensive alternatives.

As I mentioned earlier, this blog is a little more focused on the here and now of living green, there is no “pie in the sky” or “maybe in twenty years this idea will be reality” type of science fiction on this site.

If you are looking for solid, easy ways of decreasing your impact on the environment as well as keeping a few extra bucks in your pocket as a bonus, this is the site for you.

As this years EarthDay approaches, give GreenLivingTips.com a looksee and maybe you can find a tip of two that you can use this spring.

Definitions of Malware, Spyware, Viruses and More - Beginners Guide to Malware, Viruses and Spyware.

Making Money from Malware: Spyware, botnets, keystroke loggers and dialers.

Spyware, Trojan Horses and Browser HijackersIn our two previous articles we touched upon two separate, yet equally important topics in malicious computer software.

Malware, which can be considered any type of software that intends to do harm to your computer or network. Whether that harm is actual distruction or data, disrupting the ability of a network to function or just to be an annoyance.

Trojan Horses, which are the Typhoid Maries of the software world, carrying deadly programs around inside while on the outside pretending to be anything but the disease carriers that they really are.

Up until now we have not really touched on the ‘why’ of malware. Why do people spend endless amounts of time coming up with pieces of software that does nothing less than annoy, harrass and in general disrupt peoples enjoyment of the Internet and/or ruins man years worth of work and data.

Today we will be talking about the ‘profit motive’ factor and the real cash cows of the malware software community - spyware, botnets and keyboard loggers.

Spyware - Computer software that is installed on your computer without your knowledge for the specific purpose of tracking and reporting your online activity to a third party, usually for marketing research, stealing online information such as credit card, logon user names and passwords and other financial information.

Browser Hijackers - Variation of spyware that is installed without your knowledge on your computer in order to direct your internet browser to specific websites. The owners of those websites have typically paid the developer of the browser highjacker in order to guarantee web traffic to their site for a specific purpose, either to install other spyware, show un-ending streams of pop up windows or simply to direct you away from a competitors website without your knowledge.

Keyloggers - Although not as common as Spyware and Browser Highjackers, Keyloggers can be a lot more dangerous. In the simplest sense, keyloggers are simple programs that are installed on you computer to detect and record every single key press on your keyboard. They then send these recorded keystrokes to a third party. The keystrokeloggers can and do record user ids and passwords to shopping/banking/financial websites. Any information that is entered by using the keyboard can be stolen.

Whether they are hijacking your internet browser to take you to a website that you did not want to visit, stealing your personal financial and identification information, or reporting all your online activities, all of the programs listed above are used for one purpose. To make money for the people that developed or are spreading them around the Internet and installing them on your computer through websites, spam email and trojan horse programs.

The only way to fight this problem is to have the correct anti-spyware and other protective software installed, regularly update and run the protection software and keep your operating system as up to date as possible with security patches.

Come back later or subscribe to our RSS Feed in order to find out more about how to remove spyware and other malicious software from your computer. In upcoming posts we will also be talking about protecting yourself and your loved ones from online identity theft.

Top 10 Reasons Why I am in Love with Ubuntu Linux

Ubunut Banner

Some of my friends may call me a fan of Ubuntu, others may call me a fanatic. You can call me either one and I wouldn’t mind one bit. I’m in love with Ubuntu Linux and I can say that with no shame or regrets whatsoever.Tux Swats Microsoft Butterfly

I originally started using Ubuntu approximately 12 months ago. At the time it started just as a fling, something to try and maybe have fun with, but no serious commitment. After I had tried it for several weeks however, I decided that I had found my electronic soul mate and made the switch from stodgy and disagreeable Windows to fresh, new and exciting Linux.

As with any relationship there are the inevitable bumps along the road. Over the past year however, I have definitely grown to appreciate the differences that set Ubuntu Linux apart from ‘that other operating system’.

As a sort of anniversary celebration of my year with Linux, and with the release of the new version of Ubuntu Linux 8.04 due this month, I decided to list the Top 10 Reasons why I am in Love with Ubuntu.

1 - Easy to Try - If you are just interested in Ubuntu and want to give it a try without destroying your existing installation of Windows, that’s no problem. Ubuntu Linux has a ‘Live CD’ option that allows you to start, load and use the full operating system directly off of the installation CD/DVD. There is no harm done to your existing Operating System or any files on your Hard Disk Drive.

2 - Security - Linux is built with security in mind from the ground up. It was made to be used be multiple users and on the Internet from the word GO. Right from the moment that Ubuntu is installed and you start up your computer for the first time Ubuntu is ready to face just about any threat. Ubuntu Linux is more secure with no additional software being installed than the most patched, firewalled and anti-virus program laden Windows computer will ever be.

Example Screenshot of Ubuntu Beryl Graphics3 - Excellent Graphics - This isn’t your old command-line style of Linux that was the norm just a couple of years ago. The newest versions of Linux have Graphical User Interfaces (GUI’s) that are not only very pretty, they are clean, clear, easy to understand and navigate.

4 - Helpful Community - If you have never visited a Linux website or forum before, I suggest visiting UbuntuForums.org and seeing for yourself how helpful the members there really are. The amount of knowledge that is shared on a daily basis and the help that is available for the asking is truly incredible. Rarely does a question get asked or help requested that an answer is not posted for within minutes if not hours. If you have never even seen or heard about Linux or Ubuntu before, I highly recommend the Absolute Beginners Talk thread at ubuntuforums.org.

5 - Ease of Switching Operating Systems - If you have ever used an operating system that is based on a windowed type GUI, like Windows or Mac, there is very little learning curve required. Most if not all of the actions and commands that need to be given can now be controlled with the mouse. Gone are the days of needing an advanced degree in Computer Science in order to simply open your email. If anything, the Linux GUI that has evolved is even easier to use, navigate and makes more sense than the Windows environment.

6 - Easy Software Installation and Updating - Compared to installing a new piece of software on Windows, the Linux method appears almost too easy. Basically you open the included Package Manager, type in the type of software you are looking for in the built in search tool, select the application that most fits your needs and click install. Done. Gone are the days of restarting the computer in order to complete the installation or reading long complicated End User Agreements.

7 - ShipIt Ubuntu - Don’t have a broadband Internet Connection or don’t want to create your own installationFree Ubunut CD's disk for Ubuntu? No Problem, Canonical, the company that manages the Ubuntu Linux business affairs and commercial support options, will ship you a completely free installation disk that is ready to go. There is no requirements, no backroom deals to agree to. You ask them for a free copy, they send it to you. You don’t even have to pay for shipping!

8 - Customization - As little or as much as your heart desires, you can make the Ubuntu operating system fit your every whim. Don’t like the standard media player or internet browser, just download, install and try a different one. There are so many different flavors of just about every type of application that it is practically guaranteed that you will find one that fits your particular style.

9 - Extend Your Life, Or at least extend the life of your computer - Ubuntu is perfect for people that either can’t or don’t want to spend top dollar for new computer equipment every 2-3 years. Linux is so resource friendly that it can run perfectly well on computers that are over 5 years old. MS Vista has a hard enough time running on state of the art PC’s that are brand new and cost thousands of dollars.

Liberate Yourself from MS Windows10 - Freedom - As in free to download, free to install as many copies of the software on as many computers as you want. Freedom to escape the constant Microsoft dance of constantly updating drivers, security patches, restrictions on what you can install and when you can install it, what media you can play and what hardware you have to have in order to play it. All of that pressure to conform to Windows pressure leaves the moment you make the switch to Linux.

I know that Linux isn’t for everyone, and that is fine. For those of you that do want to try something a little bit different or if you have an old computer just sitting around that you don’t know what else to do with. Consider giving Ubuntu a try, I know that you won’t regret it once you do.
